The people of Perth County gave over $26,000 to the United Way of Perth-Huron’s “Caravan of Hope” as it crossed the county Feb. 8.
Standing on the steps of Stratford City Hall Wednesday afternoon, UWPH executive director Ryan Erb announced that the agency’s predicted $70,000 gap was down to $61,513.34 after Caravan stops in Listowel, Milverton and Mitchell. Cheque presentations in Listowel included $5,000 from Ideal Supply and $2,873.20 from the CIBC Huron Perth District. Individual donations were also received at all three locations.
In Stratford, the Caravan stop included a cheque presentation of $14,111 from the Jan. 30 United Way Past Chairs’ Spaghetti Dinner. The Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans presented $1,000 while Marty Rops from Libro Financial presented $500 in staff contributions.
And in keeping with the campaign’s “$11 in the 11th hour” request, Stratford CAO Ron Shaw and Stratford mayor Dan Mathieson made $11 donations and spoke about the importance of the United Way.
Speaking about “troubling times” across the county and province, Mathieson reminded the audience that United Way programs help one in three people in Perth and Huron counties.
“The eleventh hour is a great time for us to all step up,” he said.
Lisa Wilde from the Emily Murphy Centre, Wendy Orchard from One Care Home and Community Services and Bev Hagedorn from Straford/Perth Shelterlink shared what their agencies accomplish when people give to the United Way.
“You’re funding choices for people and changes for people,” said Hagedorn.
Following Stratford, the Caravan of Hope travelled to Perth South and St. Marys. With donations from all six locations, the predicted funding gap for the UWPH was reduced to $43,782.67. The agency originally predicted a gap of $100,000 in early January, but donations decreased it to $70,000 by the end of last month.
The UWPH takes the Caravan of Hope to Huron County tomorrow, visiting Wingham, Blyth, Goderich, Clinton, Seaforth and Exeter.
